They\u2019re too radical, too fundamental. One risks being taken for crazy.\nBut for a couple of years now, one question has been pressing on me more insistently each day: are we really sure that space and time are the very backdrop on which the universe is built?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The answer is: it depends on the point of view. Surely, space and time are the constituents of the universe that our brain perceives through the five senses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Up until the end of the 19th century, all phenomena were described within a three-dimensional world that had, at its center, a great clock: time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then special relativity taught us that space and time are not separate, but in some way bound together, belonging to a single entity called spacetime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.photonics-italia.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/SpaceTime.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-576\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.photonics-italia.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/SpaceTime.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.photonics-italia.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/SpaceTime-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.photonics-italia.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/SpaceTime-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.photonics-italia.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/SpaceTime-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.photonics-italia.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/SpaceTime-12x12.jpg 12w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>So, since the early 20th century, the stage on which physical phenomena occur has been spacetime. Today we take it for granted, even though at first it was difficult to accept that space and time are inseparable. Yet all experiments confirm exactly that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then came quantum mechanics. At first, we realized that we cannot know exactly where a particle is, but only with what probability we will find it at a certain point in space and time. This probability (or more precisely, probability density) is described by the wave function, the solution of Schr\u00f6dinger\u2019s equation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"162\" height=\"39\" src=\"https:\/\/www.photonics-italia.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/image.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-584\" style=\"width:251px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.photonics-italia.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/image.png 162w, https:\/\/www.photonics-italia.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/image-18x4.png 18w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 162px) 100vw, 162px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">And according to the Copenhagen interpretation, the probability density function is precisely the squared modulus of the wave function (psi).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.photonics-italia.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/PSI.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-577\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.photonics-italia.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/PSI.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.photonics-italia.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/PSI-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.photonics-italia.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/PSI-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.photonics-italia.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/PSI-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.photonics-italia.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/PSI-12x12.jpg 12w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Up to this point, nothing too strange: we have a function that tells us with what probability we will find a particle at (x, y, z, t), in accordance with Born\u2019s rule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"138\" height=\"35\" src=\"https:\/\/www.photonics-italia.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/image-1.png\" alt=\"Equazione di Born\" class=\"wp-image-587\" style=\"width:230px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.photonics-italia.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/image-1.png 138w, https:\/\/www.photonics-italia.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/image-1-18x5.png 18w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 138px) 100vw, 138px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>But upon a closer look, something<em>weird<\/em>emerges: <strong>the particle doesn\u2019t exist at any point in spacetime before it is measured or observed<\/strong>. So it\u2019s not that the particle exists but we don\u2019t know where it is\u2014no, the particle does not exist at all in space and time!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the moment of measurement, the wave function <strong>collapses<\/strong> into one of the possible eigenstates |ai<sub>i<\/sub>&gt;, secondo la cosiddetta <strong>proiezione<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"419\" height=\"54\" src=\"https:\/\/www.photonics-italia.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/image-5.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-599\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.photonics-italia.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/image-5.png 419w, https:\/\/www.photonics-italia.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/image-5-300x39.png 300w, https:\/\/www.photonics-italia.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/image-5-18x2.png 18w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 419px) 100vw, 419px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It is precisely in that moment that the particle acquires a position in spacetime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And here the doubt arises: maybe the very question \u201cwhere is a particle before measurement?\u201d is a wrong question. What if spacetime doesn\u2019t exist at the level of elementary particles? If spacetime doesn\u2019t exist for an unobserved particle, then the question \u201cwhere is it?\u201d is meaningless\u2014because \u201cwhere\u201d already assumes spacetime. And if spacetime itself doesn\u2019t exist, the question collapses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But when the particle is observed, spacetime most definitely exists. So, what does this mean?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s the radical idea: spacetime is created at the moment of measurement\u2014that is, at the moment of wave function collapse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And the world we observe? In it, spacetime certainly exists. It\u2019s as if there were \u201csomething\u201d outside spacetime (I say outside because spacetime does not yet exist) that causes the wave functions of all particles to collapse, thereby creating spacetime. And I don\u2019t mean that human observation makes wave functions collapse\u2014that would be a huge misunderstanding. There is something that causes the collapse, but it certainly cannot live within spacetime (our world), because spacetime itself does not exist before the wave function collapse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is something that \u201cunfolds\u201d spacetime at the moment a property of a particle is observed or measured. The particle is then projected into spacetime. Spacetime, which we consider the <em>fabric <\/em>of the universe, is not the ultimate background of reality, but only the background after wave function collapse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And before? The particle exists, but not in spacetime\u2014it exists in another realm that does not rest on space and time. That is why space and time are not the <em>fabric<\/em>, the foundation, of the universe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What this realm is, I don\u2019t know. Nor do I know what exactly causes wave function collapse\u2014I cannot describe it with equations, and that frustrates me. I\u2019d be tempted to say that consciousness causes the collapse, but I don\u2019t think we have a proper mathematical representation of consciousness\u2014or at least, I don\u2019t know one. Even though some authors have tried to translate consciousness into mathematical terms. Here are a few examples:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Von Neumann\u2013Wigner<\/strong>: they speculated that consciousness is directly tied to wave function collapse. Today this interpretation is treated very cautiously, though it remains fascinating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Integrated Information Theory (IIT, Tononi)<\/strong>: consciousness is defined as the amount of integrated information, measured by a quantity called \u03a6.<br>Formally:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"189\" height=\"34\" src=\"https:\/\/www.photonics-italia.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/image-2.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-589\" style=\"width:267px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.photonics-italia.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/image-2.png 189w, https:\/\/www.photonics-italia.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/image-2-18x3.png 18w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 189px) 100vw, 189px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>where I indicates information. It\u2019s not a physics equation, but rather an attempt to give mathematical form to conscious experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Entropy-based relations<\/strong>: some propose that consciousness is tied to a system\u2019s ability to reduce its uncertainty. Roughly:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"169\" height=\"27\" src=\"https:\/\/www.photonics-italia.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/image-3.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-590\" style=\"width:261px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.photonics-italia.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/image-3.png 169w, https:\/\/www.photonics-italia.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/image-3-18x3.png 18w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 169px) 100vw, 169px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>meaning that a conscious system would be one that optimally reorganizes internal and external entropy<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I decided to write this article because I\u2019ve noticed I\u2019m not the only one thinking this \u201cstrange\u201d way.
